Dematerialized e-Prescriptions (Ricetta Elettronica)
Italy has achieved nearly 100% "dematerialization" of prescriptions in 2026. The PMS no longer relies on physical red or white paper slips; instead, it processes the NRE (Numero Ricetta Elettronica).
When a patient provides their NRE and health card, the PMS pulls the prescription directly from the SAC (Sistema di Accoglienza Centrale) or regional repositories (SAR). The system automatically checks the validity of the prescription, the availability of the drug, and calculates the "Ticket" (the patient's co-payment) based on regional rules, which can vary significantly between Lombardy, Lazio, or Sicily.
